Reston is named by its founder after himself. Robert E Simon took his initials and added the English abbreviation for town. The area has been growing and adapting since 1961. It is a fascinating story and has stayed largely true to its plan to be a place where residents can work and live all within approximately 12 square miles. The building of the Dulles Toll Road and the extension of the Silver Line Metro is contributing to the growth of this area. Loads of walking paths, park, lakes shopping and restaurants ensure that residents can live near where they work. The Reston Town Center is the heart of Bob Simons plan and continues to grow and prove additional office and retail space as well as restaurants and residential space.
Reston housing varies from very contemporary, blending in to the natural surrounds to some areas of quaint Victorian style homes. The newest high rises near the town center provide for an urban feel where a car is not a necessity.
Rob Simon lived in the Lake Anne region of Reston and remained involved with Reston until his death in 2015.
